Speaking to Sky News and the BBC Matthew commented on the longer term military prospects of the Islamic State in the face of an increased UK supported bombing campaign.
Matthew said "Whilst militarily we can and have done a lot of damage to Islamic State ulitmately there is a need for a political engagement that involves the Sunni and Shia regional powers. A regional solution needs to include a recognition of the basically Sunni Arab culture that predominates in the areas IS controls. Islamic State represents a brutal and horrendous manifestation of Sunni discontent with Alawite and Shiite governing regimes in Syria and Iraq. Military solutions need to go hand in hand with political ones."
